Nobody’s Perfect

Fourth grade is not easy and after spending a year planning her “positively purple” birthday party, Megan finds herself at odds with new student Alexis. To Megan, Alexis has it all: beauty, brains, and athletics—she’s practically perfect in every way. Though Megan tries to be nice to her, Alexis is anything but friendly, making Megan wonder, “Does she not like me because I’m deaf?” When they’re forced to collaborate on a science project, Megan discovers Alexis’s secret.

Based on the children’s book by Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Best Actress, Children of a Lesser God) and Doug Cooney, this touching new musical—simultaneously performed in spoken English and American Sign Language—is an important reminder that despite first impressions, nobody’s perfect. Recommended for ages 8 and up, and grades 3 and up. Curriculum Connections include literature, language development, peer relationships, communication, and Deaf Culture.

  1. Chris Says:

This is an amazing show for both hearing and deaf audiences. The cast album was submitted for a Grammy this year and most of the original cast has joined the tour. The ASL is perfectly integrated into the show, which is no surprise because the production was developed by one of the directors from Deaf West’s Tony-winning production of Big River. The story and script by Matlin and Cooney are absolutely charming and incredibly moving. This Kennedy Center production, which one DC reviewer called “a nearly perfect musical, travelled 3000 miles so that families in Southern California can have a chance to enjoy it. But if you want to see it, you’d better hurry and buy your tickets because the La Mirada performances are almost sold out!
